2022 overall Record 12 - 8
The boys tennis team finished their tennis season with section play. Sam Murillo won his first round against Buffalo 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals he lost in straight sets to the 5th seed from Orono. Ryder Held lost in three sets to Saint Michael Albertville. Cal Jensvold and Joe Savelli won their first match against Park Center in straight sets. Next round they lost to Wayzata, the 4th seed in straight sets. Dylan Anderson and Cooper Held lost to Anoka in straight sets.
The season was a success in many ways.
- We increased the total number of players from the range of high twenties last year to 43 players this year.
- Our record on Varsity went from 10-10 last year to 12-8.
- All spots on Varsity had a record of 500 or better.
- No seniors on the team which we are hoping will have the players push each other.
- As a coaching staff we are hoping that we have double digits of players playing more than 100 hours of tennis this summer. When we get players hitting we are improving.
Thanks for the great playing of our players and the support from our families.

Tennis team lost to the number one ranked team in the state Wayzata 7-0. I was proud our team competed. Sam played the #1 ranked player in the state and lost 6-1, 6-2. He was about 6-7 with a cannon for a serve. Once Sam got a feel for the ball he was able to get more balls in play. Dylan lost 6-4, 6-1 at 4th singles. Our doubles didn't win a point but were battling across the board. We ended the season with a 12-8 record. In addition we are not losing one player to graduation. We will have some great seniors in our lineup plus some youth. Cooper Held will be in 9th grade with 2 years of varsity matches. Blake Mellum, another 8th grader looks like he will be a great contributor to our team. Great season team and let's get ready for individual sections which start next Thursday. GO CARDS

Tennis beat Armstrong yesterday in the first round of section play 4-3. It was great to secure the win especially after we lost to them earlier in the year. Sam M (1st singles) and Dylan (4th singles) won in straight sets pretty handily. 3rd doubles of Payton L and Jon P also won in straight sets. The question was where are we going to secure our 4th point. 1st doubles Cal J and Joe S lost in straight sets but a close match. Ryder Held playing at 2nd singles won the deciding point in close to sets. What was great earlier in the year Ryder was playing at 3rd singles and lost in a Super tiebreaker. To get redemption and at a higher spot was amazing. Cooper H (3rd singles) and Will W / Blake D (2nd doubles lost in 3 sets. Players competed hard which was great to see. Tennis team finished their regular season with a 5-2 loss to Rogers. We finished the regular season with a 11-7 record. With all of the players we lost last year we had a great season. All of the players moved up to considerable spots after playing in lower spots last year in fact some players were low JV or C Squad. We are getting better I think with a team like we had if we would have been able to get more practices in it would have greatly benefited us as being new to Varsity. In addition, having so many players out for tennis I can't wait to see how they improve over the off season. Sections start on the 16th. Great job this Spring and GO CARDS Results are as follows.

The tennis team competed against Mora yesterday winning a close match 6-1. I am so proud of our players on how they played with so much GRIT and DETERMINATION. Sam played the #4 ranked player from Class A and won in straight sets. It is so nice to know you have a player at #1 that can compete with anybody he is going against. With 3 points all we needed to do is get 1 more point which made it interesting. 3rd doubles Levi and Payton were in a tight match, which they won in close straight sets. The tennis team lost to Centennial 5-2. Players played pretty well and we certainly had our chances. Sam won his match in a convincing manner 6-2. 6-0 while last year he won 7-5, 6-4. Sam sure has brought his game to the next level. He is no doubt one of the top players in the state. Ryder and Cooper lost in straight sets but they improved in both of their seconds which shows they were competing all the way through their match. Blake and Will lost their 1st set 7-6 having their chances during that set. Payton and John lost their 1st set 7-5. I believe that if they would have finished those sets having been in the lead, the 2nd set could have had a different outcome. It certainly showed today that we can compete with top teams in the area. Now it is time to start believing in how we can be. We take on Andover tomorrow at their courts

2021 overall Record 10 - 10
Tennis team ended season last Thursday at State Tournament with Sam Murillo playing singles. Due to COVID19 this year state tournament was outdoors and no consolation. Sam went up against 4th seed lost 6-0, 6-0. Sam played pretty good and found out what it takes to compete at the next level. It was phenomenal experience and with Sam being a 10th grader he is determined to be there again at state tournament. As a whole it was pretty good year considering we didn’t have a season last year. We ended up 10-10. We had 6 4-3 matches and only winning 1. You win a couple of those it could of been different record. We are graduating 5 key players in Surprise Taylor, Nick Yang, Vinny Schnabel, Henry Staples and Derek Avery. Big shoes to fill for next year but we have some depth. In addition to Sam we have Dylan Anderson, Cal Jensvold and Joe Savelli are all 10th graders. Also we have Ryder Held a 9th and Cooper Held 7th grader who got considerable matches under their belt. Blake DeGrote and William Wagner also lettered as 9th graders. I believe if they continue where they left off team will be better next year. Thanks for a fun season
---------------------
Individual sections finished yesterday with Sam Murillo competing to earn a spot in the state tournament. In the semis he went up against Elk Rivers 4th seed. Sam came out like gangbusters and won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In the Finals Sam was competing against the 3rd seed from Elk River and lost 6-2, 6-4. Same played pretty well setting up his shots but not closing them out. He seemed nervous at times which is certainly understandable. We have had 8 doubles teams make it to the state tourney over the years but the last time we had a male make it was 2002. Sam has had an incredible year playing 1st singles accumulating an 18-4 record. Individual state is next Thursday at 8:00am, believe state is at Prior Lake high school this year. Congrats Sam on a great season and good luck next week.
------------
Boys tennis had their individual sections occur yesterday at Anoka high school. Competing in singles were Surprise Taylor and Sam Murillo. Doubles teams were Nick Yang/Derek Avery and Henry Staples/Vinny Schnabel. Henry and Vinny won their first round against Forest Lake in straight sets. Their next round match they went up against the 1st seed from Duluth East and lost in straight sets. Nick and Derek played great yesterday winning 2 matches and losing in the 3rd round to Forest Lake which was the 3rd seed. In The 1st round they beat Duluth East in 3 sets and then beat the 6th seed from Anoka winning in 3 sets. Surprise lost its only match of the day to Saint Francis. His opponent was very patient and waited for him to miss his next shot. Sam won his two matches against Grand Rapids and Forest Lake winning in both in straight sets. On Thursday Sam will compete against Elk Rivers 2nd singles which will be a tough match. On the other side of the bracket will be the 3rd seed from Elk River, their 1st singles player and Anoka's 1st singles. Match starts at 10:00am at Anoka with the next round at 1:00pm. Results from yesterday are as follows:

Sam Murillo beat Grand Rapids 6-0, 6-4
Sam Murillo beat Forest Lake 6-0, 6-1

The tennis team finished the season by losing an extremely close match to Grand Rapids 5-2. It is one of the toughest matches that our program has lost in a while. Our guys competed extremely hard and you have to give to Grand Rapids who made those extra shots when needed. Derek Avery today showed what the definition of heart is. He overheard from the Grand Rapids players that they won but competed to win his match. Sam finished the season with a 15-3 record at 1st singles, what an amazing season Sam. Individuals start next Tuesday on June 1st and seeding for this occurs this evening. Ended the season with a 10-10 record. Results are as follows:

2nd Singles Surprise Taylor lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5

The tennis team finished their regular season yesterday at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. This was the second time we competed against Spring Lake and we won 6-1. It was very nice to see us improving on our score compared to when we competed against them earlier in the season in which the score was 5-2. Surprise lost to his opponent earlier in the year in straight sets and yesterday he won in 3 sets. I am hoping that this win shows that he can play out points in many different ways and still win. Sam ended the regular season winning and had a record at 1st singles of 14-3 which is amazing. Derek Avery coming off of an injury played great and we are so fortunate to have him back in our lineup. Dylan and Cal beat the same to opponents that they beat earlier in the season. The 2 of them were more dominant then their previous match. Dylan has done exceptionally great considering at the start of the season he was on the fence if he was going to play tennis. At first doubles Vinny and Henry stayed positive through the whole match even when they were down 4-1 in the 2nd and found a way to win 7-6 in the same set. We finished the regular season with a 10-9 record. We had 6 matches that went 4-3 and won 1 of those matches. Considering we had 3 returning letterwinners with a lot of Varsity experience we were very close in those matches. I am hoping in the coming sections we can compete at a high level like I know we can. Section seeding was last night we received the 4th seed and are hosting the winner of Grand Rapids and St. Francis on 5/25 at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Results are as follows:
Coon Rapids 6 Spring Lake Park 1
1st Singles Sam Murillo won 6-2, 6-2
2nd Singles Surprise Taylor won 6-2, 4-6, 10-7
3rd Singles Nick Yang won 6-0, 6-4

The Tennis Team lost another close match to Centennial yesterday 4-3 at their courts. Sam won again at 1st beating a player that he lost to last summer. This past week Sam has beaten two players that have previously beaten him this really shows how much he has raised his game. Cooper, our 7th grader on the team won in 3 sets he is developing into a pretty good player. Dylan and Cal won again in straight sets. Yesterday I moved Surprise and Nick together at 1st doubles for Surprise's 1st doubles match ever. Surprise wanted to bang the ball and when he learns that in doubles you need to get into the net and play the angles he will definitely be a good doubles player. Derek Avery and Vinny Schanbel lost in straight sets. It was great to see that their 2nd set was much better than their 1st set. Next Thursday is our last regular season match which has not been determined yet. Results are as follows:
Coon Rapids 3 Centennial 4
1st Singles Sam Murillo won 7-5, 6-4

The tennis team had 2 matches in the last 2 days. On Wednesday we lost 4-3. We have lost 4 4-3 matches and everyone we certainly had our chances. Sam opponent he competed against last summer and lost in straight sets and today he beat him in straight sets. It was great to watch him play points today. 2nd and 3rd doubles also won in straight sets. 1st doubles lost in 3 sets and Surprise had a great match in a losing effort. Yesterday the Cardinals beat Princeton 7-0 to help in the seeding process. This was the first time in a while where we had our full lineup for a match. I am hoping we can have this leading into sections. Derek Avery came off of an injury to win in straight sets. The Held brothers played a great match at 3rd doubles. Their 1st set was 7-5 and then they started hitting the ball to win 6-0. Today we compete against Centennial. Tennis results are as follows:

The boys tennis team beat St. Francis today 7-0 at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. It was great to get this win as St. Francis is in our sections. Our players played well today with items we have been working on. It seems like they were implementing this during their match on what we want them to do. We are still without Derek Avery and hoping to get him back in the lineup by the end of the week. Today we take on Champlin Park at their facility. Results are as follows:

The tennis team over the past 2 days had 2 tennis matches 1 against Anoka and Cambridge. In those 2 matches we were without Derek Avery who has 7 wins and to take this out of the lineup players are going to have to step up. In Anoka we lost 5-2 with Sam at 1 winning in straight sets. Everytime I think about where he was 2 years ago and to see the players at 1 to have a record that he does is simply amazing. With Derek out we moved Ryder Held into singles for his 1st Varsity match at singles. Ryder won in 3 sets and he played a great match against his counterpart from Anoka. We also put Cooper in at 4th and even though he lost in straight he played great. Doubles all lost in straight sets played pretty good. Yesterday we took on Cambridge and won 4-3 for our 1st 4-3 of the season. The match came down to Cal Jensvold and Dylan Anderson at 2nd doubles. Their match went to 3 sets and they won the 3rd set 6-1. Ryder won his 2nd match in a row at singles. Cooper and Joe at 3rd stayed with the plan through the whole match to get to the net and close out the points. Securing the win yesterday was great as it brought our season record to 7-7 and with Cambridge in our section it will help in the seeding process. Next week we have 4 matches and the following week we will have our cross over match in conference. Tennis results are as follows:
Coon Rapids 2 Anoka 5
1st Singles Sam Murillo won 6-3, 6-3

Yesterday the boys tennis team competed against Rogers and lost 4-3. It was probably one of the windiest days that I can remember. At Rogers they have plastic wind screens around the whole facility and the wind swirls around making it hard to put points together. So far on the season we have not won a 4-3 match. The comforting part with our players we are getting better each time we are hitting the courts. Cal and Dylan are becoming a solid doubles team and they are working great together. Derek Avery is doing a great job in his matches, he continues to grind every time he plays. The boys tennis team competes against Anoka tomorrow at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Results are as follows:
Coon Rapids 3 Rogers 4
1st Singles Sam Murillo lost 6-3, 6-4

Today the tennis team participated in a Triangular with Minneapolis Washburn and Forest Lake. In the first round tennis team competed against Washburn. They are ranked in the top 10 in the state and they lived up to the billing. In addition we were without Sam who was at Church function and Vinny still out with an injury. All singles players had to move up and we had Blake Degrote play at 3rd doubles today. In the Washburn match we lost 7-0. Surprise played an outstanding match at 1st even though he lost in straight sets. 2nd and 3rd doubles played better 2nd sets versus their 1st sets which is what you always want to see. In the 2nd match we beat Forest Lake 5-2 which was a grind. Surprise playing at 1st singles won in straight sets. Derek Avery moving up to 3rd played a solid match being down in the 1st to come back and win 6-4 and 6-1 in 2nd. Cooper Held went up against another 7th grader for a battle and found out a way to win in straight sets. Cal and Dylan continued to win at 2nd doubles and as they keep playing they are starting to move much better. Connor Tharp and Blake Degrote won in 3 at 3rd doubles. This was Blake's 1st varsity win and with Blake a 9th grader there will be many more to come. This was a great win with missing 2 major contributors and it is a team in our section. Coon Rapids tennis team beat Andover at the Bob Pivec tennis courts today 7-0. I continue to be amazed how hard players are working and very receptive to suggestions from the coaching staff. Sam at one continued his domination at 1st singles and Surprise Taylor won his match in straight sets. Surprise was focused from start to finish. Derek Avery started out slow, losing his first set but coming back to win the next 2. After DErek won his 2nd set I asked him what he wanted to do and he said play a full 3rd which as a coach you love that because it shows there is confidence with your players. Cooper Held our 7th grader also started slow but made a few changes that was suggested and he won many games in row. Doubles continued their strong play working on aspects from practice, they are continuing to get better. I believe we have some special going on with our team. Yesterday the boys tennis team beat Spring Lake Park 5-2. It was so great to finally play after 3 cancellations since our last match, 2 for weather and 1 for COVID. SO far this season we have had 7 cancellations due to weather and 2 for COVID. In addition to yesterday we were missing 3 players who have contributed immensely during the season. The players that jumped in played great. Sam Murillo at first continued playing great. 3 out of his last 4 matches he has won 6-0. 6-0 which is incredible. Ryder Held and Henry Staples played a great match at 1st doubles. After a close 1st set of 7-6 they won their 2nd set 6-1. They kept with their game plan and played great. 2nd doubles team of Cal Jensvold and Dylan Anderson won convincingly in straight sets. The score does not reflect how close the match was. Tennis team played their first Conference match of the season against Armstrong. The boys tennis team won 6-1. It was really great to watch them work on the items we have been covering in practice. Sam at 1st singles continued playing some solid tennis winning 6-0, 6-1. The player he went against played first singles there 2 years ago and beat our player 6-3, 6-4. It shows how much work he has put into his game. Surprise played a fantastic second set winning 6-1 while his first set was 6-4. When I think about 2 years ago Surprise played 4 singles on C Squad and now is 2nd singles varsity. Ryder Held 9th grader finally won his first varsity match at 1st double with Henry Staples. Ryder continues on this path by the time he is done with high school he will be a very good tennis player. For the first time all doubles teams won in the same match. They worked hard from the previous days' practice incorporating what we covered. I believe if the players keep pushing themselves each day we will get better and better, special things could happen this year. Results from the match from Armstrong:

Coon Rapids Tennis team had their first matches of the season this past Saturday at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Teams participating were Schaeffer Academy (rochester, mn), Irondale and Anoka. The format for the matches were 2 out 3 no add with 3rd set a super tiebreaker. It was an exciting day since there was not a tennis season last Spring. The makeup for our team is one with experience and first year varsity tennis players.
Our tennis captains this year are Sam Murillo who is in 10th grader. 2 years ago Sam played 2-4 singles in our lineup and this year he will be playing 1st singles for all of our matches unless he is playing doubles. Surprise Taylor is our other captain who is in 12th grade. 2 years ago Surprise played on C-Squad. He has worked extremely hard to put himself in position to play 2nd singles varsity in 2 years. Nick Yang is our 3rd captain and is in 12th grade. 2 years ago Nick played 1st and 2nd singles. Nick will be playing 2nd or 3rd singles or at 1st doubles.
Our first round match was against Schaeffer Academy which we lost 6-1. We lost 3 Super Tiebreakers which showed we were competitive in our 1st match. Highlights were watching Sam play his 1st match at 1st singles and he played extremely well. At 4th singles we had Cooper Held who is in 7th grade. Cooper lost in the super tiebreaker and he played extremely well. Surprise played 2nd singles in this match and he also lost in a super tiebreaker. There is no question in watching Surprise play that hard work in the off season will help you develop into a good tennis player. In our doubles lineups we had 5 1st year varsity players so it was great watching them compete against their opponents.
In our 2nd round match we went up against Irondale which we won 5-2. Surprise won his first Varsity tennis match which has been in the waiting since he came out for tennis 2 years ago. Connor Tharp and Henry Staples won their match at 2nd singles. This was Connor's first varsity match we won in straight sets. Joe Savelli and Dylan Anderson also won their first varsity at 3rd doubles. In fact this is Dylan's first year playing tennis, what amazing accomplishment.
Ryder Held who is 9th grader played in all matches he came extremely close in his 2nd match against Irondale losing in a super tiebreaker. Cal Jensvold played in 2 matches and also did really good.
In our 3rd round we went up against Anoka which we lost 4-3. Our 3 captains won their matches in straight sets. We lost all doubles in straight sets. Looking at our doubles results we played much better as the day went along. There is a lot of promise with this team. Derek Avery had an extremely close match which he lost 12-10 in the super tiebreaker. With Anoka in your conference and section we will for sure see them one more time and most likely it will be another close match. Coach Bertram does a great job with his players.
Monday 4/12 we take on Armstrong at home this is the 3rd time this match has been rescheduled. It was a fun day last Saturday and JV went 2-1. I am really lucky to be working with such great young men and fantastic coaches. Results are as follows:

Coaches Corner
On Tuesday the boys tennis team took on Forest Lake for the last match in the regular season. Mid way through the match the varsity team was leading 3-2 with wins at 1st Singles (Andrew A), 3rd Singles (Caden C) and 4th Singles(Derek A). Forest Lake won points at 2nd Singles (Nick Y) and 1st Doubles (Kerman A/Tyler H). We needed a win 2nd or 3rd doubles. 3rd doubles won 1st set 6-4 and were at 6-6 all when they started their tie breaker to the first one to 7. As they were playing there was some confusion on how to play so I started helping them out. As they were playing Coon Rapids was up 7-5 which should of been the match but these young men forgot if it was the 2nd set or 3rd set. It had been predetermined that if set were split we were playing a super tiebreaker. The players kept playing to the first one to 10 and Forest Lake won 10-8. I was hoping that they were going to play the super tiebreaker but both teams shook each other hands and Forest Lake won the match with out playing the official 3rd set. We ended up loosing 2nd doubles in a super tiebreaker 10-8. It was a tough match to stomach but ethically I could not re-correct the score with Coon Rapids loosing 4-3. Now it brings us to our match last night in first round of sections. Match was tied 3-3 with 3rd doubles playing with Nick T and Hoang V. At the start of the 3rd set Nick asked our players what was the score and they told him it was 3-3. The 3rd set was see sawing back and forth leading the match to a tiebreaker. A memorable moment for me was watching our varsity and JV cheering on these 2 young men. We ended up wining 7-5 in the 7 point tie breaker. This helped us secure the win 4-3. Results are as follows;
Coon Rapids 3 Forest Lake 4
1st Singles Andrew Argeros won 6-1, 6-0
2nd Singles Nick Yang lost 6-4, 6-0
3rd Singles Caden Carey won 6-0, 6-7, 10-8

The boys tennis team has been extremely bust since last Friday through Monday. On Friday the boys tennis team beat North Saint Paul 6-1 with 2 players getting their first varsity wins. Derek Avery has been very close since the season started and he finally closed out at 4th singles with a deciding victory. Hoang Vu played in his first match at 3rd doubles won also in straight sets. In this match it was the first time all season that all doubles won in match, which was great to see. On Saturday the tennis team hosted a round robin with North Branch, Rogers and Osseo. In the first match of the day the Cardinals which is in the same section of 7AA. We beat the Vikings 5-2 with all doubles winning and the top 2 singles spots coming away with a victory. Coaches Corner
This is the first time where I am writing short memo on our website for what a group of senior players gave to our program. The core guys over the last 4 years have been Aaron Bauer, Drew Grimmer, Nate Bye and Jerod Musolf. Than Alex Fish came out to tennis from baseball and Adam Boyum started playing some varsity tennis matches. The guys got some more friends to come, Brad Crotty and others. In there 9th grade year the team had 8-12 record with improving each year after: 10th grade 10-10; 11th grade 14-8; 12th grade 21-7. At the start of this season the boys record since I have been coaching was 199-121 which now is 220-128. Individually the 5 guys listed above had a major impact in the accumulation of wins over the years 251 match wins and 138 match losses which equates to 65% wins. All of guys worked hard since their 9th grade year but look at the trends of Nate and Jerod on how they improved over their 4 years. There records over the 4 years are as follows:
17 16 15 14
a. Aaron Bauer 23-5 13-9 11-7 11-6 58-27
b. Nate Bye 23-4 12-7 8-10 3-5 46-26
c. Alex Fish 23-5 16-3 9-9 N/A 48-17
d. Drew Grimmer 21-7 17-5 13-5 7-11 58-28
e. Jerod Musolf 19-8 12-7 7-9 3-16 41-40
We are loosing some great leaders who made a great impact and led by example on the court. I wish all of our seniors best of luck and I know they will succeed in what ever they do.

The Coon Rapids tennis team lost yesterday to Elk River 6-1 in the semi finals of 7AA. It was a great season where the players won 21 matches and lost 7. In the match yesterday we started outside than we got interrupted with rain and went indoors than moved back outdoors. The upcoming players will have some big shoes to fill. Our 3 captains did a great job all year. The boys tennis team beat Anoka yesterday 4-3 to advance to the semis against Elk River. Earlier in the year we beat Anoka 5-2 and I knew it was going to be close match. All of the matches were won in straight sets. It came down to Jared Musolf at 4th singles being the last match with meet tied 3-3. Ever since moving Jared to 4th singles he has done a great job. In Singles Jared lost in first round match and Alex Fish won 2 matches and lost in the quarter to the #2 seed. In doubles Nate and Andrew won their first match and lost in the second round. On Saturday the Coon Rapids tennis team finished their season at the Bob Pivec courts playing against Fridley, Roseville and Totino Grace. in the first round they went up against Roseville and won their match 5-2. I believe it was one of our teams best matches of the year. Roseville is solid team and it took all of our players to play their best. Second round the cardinals played against Totino Grace and lost 4-3. It was tough match where some of our players seemed pretty tired from their previous match. In the last round the team went up against Fridley and based on the weather conditions we decided to play the match as all doubles. We played pretty good in this match. Drew Grimmer and Aaron Bauer continued their winning ways when they play together. Jared Musolf won all 3 of his matches. In the seeding meeting we received the 6th seed in which we would be hosting Cambridge. We were scheduled to play them earlier in the season which we got rained out. We started playing them on Monday and prior to the rain coming in we only got a few games in so we rescheduled for yesterday during the school day. One of our goals every season is too win at least one round in the sections. As the match was going it became apparent that we were going to win at 2nd and 3rd singles and Cambridge was going to win at 1st and 4th singles. Once singles were complete it was coming down to the doubles points. Next match complete was 3rd doubles with Adam and Nate. 1st doubles was playing a tough competitive match in which they won their first set 6-0, and than lost 2nd set 7-5. As the 3rd set was going our doubles team was down 3-0, I went out and talked to them on what I thought they should be doing. Once they implemented this they started wining more games and ended up with a 7-5 3rd set win and close the match for the Cardinals. 2nd doubles lost in a close 3 set match.
Upon completion the players went to get some food as we were going to head on a bus to play Chisago Lakes as they were the 3rd seed. Prior to the match I knew they were going to be good especially at their top two spots. These two players went to state last year and were solid players to build around the rest of your lineup. Drew Grimmer probably played one of his best matches even though he lost in straight sets. 1st and 2nd doubles lost their first sets and made some changes to their game and won the second set and 3rd set in a super tiebreaker. In being the second match of the day in highly tested match our players played a solid match and to end the season with a record of 14-8 it was a good season. Today Nate Murphy, Tshwjzoo Moua, Spencer Juola, and Mark Daml played their last match for the tennis team. They have contributed at a high level and all had one at least one match during the season. Results for the two section matches area as follows:

The tennis team lost to Elk River today 7-0 bringing their season record to 9-5. Elk River is a team that is good year after year. Tennis results from Coon Rapids Tennis torunament which took April 16. Going into the tournament I knew it was going to be a tough tournament with missing 3 players from our lineup. This opportunity gave other players the chance to play in the varsity lineup. In the first round we took on Roseville they beat us 4-3 winning at 4th singles and all of the doubles. We had some players playing positions that they normally won't be playing if we weren't missing the players we did. For example, Brad Crotty played first and we had a new doubles team at 3rd. In the next round we played Fridley which had 4 points go into the the super tiebreaker, with Coon Rapids took 3 of 4. During 3rd doubles second set I talked to Jack if he wanted him his first varsity match and said absolutely. Jerod than said I want you too win also, they ended winning 10-7 and they were always up in the super tiebreaker. We ended up beating Fridley 5-2. In the last round of the day we played against St. Francis which is a new team in our section. We beat St. Francis 5-2 having 2 matches go 3 sets. Jerod and Jack won their section match together at third doubles. Aaron Bauer at 1st singles, Drew Grimmer at 2nd singles and Alex Fish at 3rd singles won all of their matches on the day. For Aaron taking the number one spot and having a 6-1 record he is doing a amazing job at this spot. Today the boys tennis took on the Anoka Tornadoes which I knew would be a tough match since last year we lost 4-3 at their site. Their tennis team is coached really good and they started out the match on fire. As the match continue several points at 2 and 3 singles were working their opponents by moving the ball around. Aaron Bauer lost in a close match at first by playing better in the second set. 2and 3 doubles won both of their tie breakers with second in their 2 set and 3 doubles winning the super tiebreaker after playing a smart 2 set. The tennis plays tomorrow against Blaine which will be another tough match at the Bob Pivec courts. Blaine has had our number over the last few years hopefully we can out on the wining side. The tennis team is 3-0 at this currently. The results are as follows:
1st singles Aaron Bauer Lost. 6-2, 6-4

Coon Rapids started the 2016 tennis season off with a win over Champlin Park 6-1. The boys tennis players started off by sweeping the singles in straight sets and winning 2 of 3 matches in doubles. The new doubles combination of Mike and Steven at first looks like a pretty good team at first doubles and with Aaron at first singles it should lead to some good points for our team. After bad weather through the first two weeks of the season we played our match indoors at Daytona tennis and golf. Next week we have 3 matches and 3 matches in our round robin tournament. There is plenty of work we need to do but it looks promising based on the work ethic our players have been exhibiting. Results are as follows:
1st singles Aaron Bauer Won 6-3, 6-1
2nd singles Drew Grimmer Won 6-1, 6-1
3rd singles Alex Fish Won 6-0, 6-1
4th singles Nate Bye Won 6-1, 6-3

The boys tennis team finished up their season by beating Champlin Park and than loosing to Mounds View. We lost 2 matches in 3 and won another match in 3 sets. In the quarter finals we lost to number ranked team Mounds View. They were as good as a team that I have gone against. Now that the sections are moved we will not be playing against them hopefully for a while. We ended up our season 10-10 with one senior in the top 20 spots. Over the past few days the boys tennis team ended their regular season on a high note. They lost to top ten ranked team Elk River and than beat Totino Grace. In the Elk river the cardinals lost 6-0 with one match not completed. Ellis played at first singles and played the longest out of all of the singles in fact making several games going to deuce. The player Ellis played took 3rd in singles last year so he was a extremely good player. In the doubles 2nd doubles match did not completed due to rain and 3rd doubles lost what was a very entertaining match. On Tuesday the Cardinals were playing there last regular match of the season. During the seeding meeting on the night before Totino Grace was seeded 6th and Cardinals were 8th, there was a little incentive to try to win this match. Everybody played what I thought was there best match of the season, especially going into sections. Bobby Yang won in 3 sets which was the last match of the day. 2nd and 3rd singles lost but was some tough players they played against. Drew at 4 won pretty handily against his opponent. All of the doubles won which was great to see especially going into sections. Mike Fredrickson won his first varsity match of the season. One of our goals I have as a coach is to make sure everybody who plays varsity wins at least one match and that was great to see. In section play the Cardinals will be playing Champlin Park in the first round of sections with Champlin the 9th seed and Cardinals the 8th seed. Results are as follows:

The Coon Rapids Tennis team lost to Centennial 6-1. Going into the match I wanted to see how our doubles could do by placing different combinations together and to see how some players could do playing some singles. Centennial is tied in first place with Elk River and Maple Grove, which they haven't played yet it will be interesting to see how they do. All singles lost but there were promising points during the match. In doubles Aaron Bauer and Ellis lost in 3 sets showing that they can play against a doubles team that hasn't lost all season. Bobby Yang and Drew Grimmer won in 3 sets, doubles team they beat also hadn't lost all season. 3rd doubles lost in straight sets but they worked on a couple of items between 1st and 2nd set and ended up wining more games. The Coon Rapids boys tennis on Saturday played in the Bob Pivec round robin on Saturday came away with wining all 3 matches. In the first round we beat Rogers 4-3 coming down to Tshwjzoo at 4 singles to win in the super tiebreaker. Prior to the super tiebreaker I told Tshwjzoo that match was tied and he was the deciding point. It was his first varsity win and what a way to do it. In the match all singles players won which was the first time all year. In the second round we beat Fridley with the surprise match at first doubles which was Nate Bye and Drew Grimmer. They were playing a team that had great shots and with our players keeping the ball in the court it made all of the difference in the world. The last match was against St. Paul Washington and the score was 5-2. All doubles won in straight sets which was great to see since we had different combinations. Also every player but 1 won at least once during the day which made it a total team contribution. Winning all 3 matches were Aaron Bauer, Alex Fish, Tshwjzoo Moua, and DaSahaun Smith. The boys tennis team lost a heartbreaker to Anoka yesterday at their courts. Score 4-3 with 4 points going 3 sets. The last point which was the deciding point was at 2nd singles with Ellis loosing a very close match 7-5 in the third set. What was amazing when it was finished Ellis ran right over to their coach and congratulated them in the win. To me it would of been nice to win but this is why we play sports. In addition, Ellis said I know what I need to work on from this match. Aaron Bauer and Drew Grimmer continued their winning ways by beating Anoka's opponent 6-4, 6-0. The Cardinals started off section play against Park Center which was a close match last week. My hope is that when ever we play a team a second time first of all is that we win and second is that we win more points the second time around. We played a different lineup and what was great watching Aaron Bauer one of our many 9th graders win in 3 sets. In fact he won in 3 sets and last week he lost in 2. Jerod won for second day in a row and he has improved so much during the course of the season. With the win we will play Centennial at their courts I am hoping the players will play with confidence and give the Cougars all they can handle. Results are as follows:
1st singles Kendall Setts 12 won 6-0, 6-2
2nd singles Bobby Yang 11 lost 6-3, 7-5

Today the Cardinals played 3 matches in what was a perfect day. The matches helped me get a good understanding of the 3 lineups I could possibly use during section play. In the first round we played Roseville and we lost 5-2. We knew going into the match not having one of our top players it would be tough match, our two winners were Bobby Yang and Ellis Skye. In the second round we played Totino Grace who is in our section and it was an important match to win. Cardinals came out on top with 6-1 victory. Highlights were Dashaun Smith wining his first varsity match which I believe to be of many more to come. Also, Larsen and Jared won their first match, it just shows how hard work pays off. In addition it was Jared first varsity win ever. Last round we played Rogers who is also in our section and we talked about the importance of wining this match. Cardinals won this match 5-2 with Ellis Skye wining all of his matches on the day and everybody won at least once in the three matches. At the begining of the tournament I told the players about Mr. Kindle (Assistant Principal) on how he is battling cancer and the outcome doesn't look good. Normally before a match I give some owrds of encouragement and the players usually go 1,2,3 Cardinals. But today they said 1,2,3 Mr. Kindle, which I have never been more proud of a bunch of players in my life. Results are as follows:

Going into Blaine I knew it was going to be tough match with the amount of experience they have and I was correct. We lost 7-0 and as what has been happening lately we start off slow in the first set and make adjustments in the second. The Coon Rapids Boys tennis team played their first match in over 1 week due to the weather that has been in the area. The boys tennis team played Osseo at their courts. Last year when Osseo was at Coon Rapids they beat the cardinals 4-3. We knew going into the match is was going to be a tight match and with the results it was. Highlights on the match was that at all spots we competed hard all the way through. Four matches went in 3 sets which the cardinals winning 2 and Osseo taking the other 2. Ellis and Drew won their first varsity match which I believe will be many more to come. In their second set in tie breaker they had several set points against them in the tiebreaker and found a way to win the points. One of the keys to the match that I discussed to the players prior to the start of the match was to get the serves and returns in, which they did in this breaker. Also Aaron Bauer won in 3 after loosing the first set started moving his feet and played lights out in the other 2 sets. Today the cardinals play against Blaine and tomorrow play in a triangular at Saint Michael. results are as follows:

Today the Cardinals won their first round 5AA section match against Totino Grace by beating them 5-2. At the end of the match Nate Porter won both of his matches as well as 2nd doubles of Steven Yang and Hoc Vu. It was great to see 1st doubles compete at higher level in the second set. Last Friday Coon Rapids lost to Osseo 4-3. Going into the match I knew it was going to be a close match based on what Osseo had from last year’s team. Even with this being the case I put one of our top players Bobby Yang into doubles to get his confidence back up for the balance of the tennis season. As the season goes along still trying to find ways to pull out wins at 3rd doubles. They are starting to play better but we need to win the key points. Arsel Husikic and Aaron Bauer are the two best 8th graders and continue to show a lot of promise as they continue to win in their matches. Overall team record is 4-4, results are as follows:
1st Singles Kendall Setts lost 6-2, 6-2

Yesterday the Cardinals beat Park Center 6-1 to bring their overall record to 5-4. It was great wining at 1st singles and 4th singles in 3 sets. Bobby made some changes to his playing in the 2nd and 3rd set which was great to see. Muggys (Steven M) and Dan continue to play high level of play at 1st doubles. Muggys is so aggressive at the net which is what we want out of our top players. Hopefully other players on our team will start doing the same thing. Hoc Vu continues his winning ways by being undefeated in singles. Results are as follows:
1st Singles Bobby Yang won 3-6, 6-0, 6-4

The following day we played Becker who we beat last year 6-1. Going into this match I knew they would be good since they had everybody back from last year. We lost 7-0 also in this match with many closer matches than what we had against Elk River. Matt Tellander lost in a very close match loosing in the 3rd set 6-4. Matt said he lost to the same player this past summer in two sets so he had his chances against him. Third doubles also lost in 3 sets making it a very close match. One of the highlights of the day was watching Aaron Bauer and Steven Yang 7th and 8th graders beat their opponents respectively. I overheard people talking that these players play in some of their Varsity lineups. Results are as follows:
1st Singles Matt Tellander 6-2, 3-6, 4-6

1st Singles Matt Tellander 1-6, 1-6

This past weekend the boys Varsity tennis team took second in the Cretin Derham Hall invite. The tournament was set up where each of the 4 singles and 4 doubles spots had to courts to play there 3 matches. The teams that participated were Cretin, Eastview, Hastings and our team. The challenging part of the tournament was the matches were at four different locations and having only one coach also added a twist. Highlights were Rumeal Setts winning two singles matches and beating a quality player from Eastview and watching him and Rob Storrick beat a quality team from
Cretin. Adam Nelson and Agassi Mila played 3rd and 4th singles winning 5 matches and loosing 1. Paul Klecker and Alex Krutchen played 3 very tough matches and they worked very effectively with each other looking like they are getting ready for sections. 1st Doubles and 1st Singles won 1 match each but lost all of their matches in the 3rd set (3rd set was a 7 point tie breaker). Individual results are as follows:
1st Singles 1-2 Chad Stearns

1st singles Chad Stearns won 6-1, 6-0
2nd singles Agassi Mila won 7-6, 6-2
3rd singles Matt Tellander won 6-1, 6-0

This weekend we play in round robin tournament at Cretin Derham Hall, Eastview and Hastings. These are 3 teams that we haven't played before in my 12 years of coaching. It should be interesting to see how we compare to some other good schools and hopefully it will prepare us for sections which start next Wednesday.

Coon Rapids tennis team had two matches this week after 6 matches last week. Against Andover the Cardinals won 5-2 which brought yesterday’s match against Centennial who is one of the top teams in the state as well as in the section. The match started pretty quick with Centennial wining at
1st singles, 2nd and 3rd doubles and Coon Rapids winning easily at 2nd singles and 3rd singles. At first doubles Rob Storrick and Bobby Tellander and Matt
Tellander playing 4th singles. I couldn’t imagine what is was like for Mr. and Mrs. Tellander watching their 2 boys competing to win their spots for the match. Rob and Bobby won the first set 6-3 and the lost 3-6. At the start of the 3rd set I told the players that we need them to win as well at 4th singles. After I talked to them Rob and Bobby won 6-1 in the 3rd set. Matt played one of the more exciting matches since I have been coaching. Matt lost the first 6-2, then won 6-2 bringing him to 3rd set. Matt started behind the 8 ball down 3-0 in the 3rd set which was the deciding point. As match continued Matt was down 5-2 Coach Stearns made a couple of suggestions to Matt which he did bringing the set to 5-4. Matt was so mentally tough in this game Matt had 3 match points that he won the points and ended up winning the match at 7-5 on an unbelievable shot. I asked Matt if he knew he was the deciding point, Matt said “I thought it was close” and then he smiled.
1st Singles Chad Stearns lost 2-6, 0-6
2nd Singles Rumeal Setts won 6-1, 6-2
3rd Singles Adam Nelson won 6-3, 6-1
4th Singles Matt Tellander won 2-6, 6-2, 7-5
1st Doubles Rob Storrick/Bobby Tellander won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1
2nd Doubles Agassi Mila/Paul Klecker lost 0-6, 1-6
3rd Doubles Alex Krutchen/Matt Morehouse lost 0-6, 4-6

Today Coon Rapids hosted the Bob Pivec tournament in one of the windiest conditions in recent memory. Throughout the day winds were in excess of 20 - 30 mph at the Cardinal courts. The tournament started out as a random draw where Coon Rapids drew Rochester Lourdes who are ranked Number 2 in class A. I was worried at first due to the tough matches we this past week against #4 Elk River and #6 Wayzata which led to two defeats. Rochester Lourdes at the top two singles spots have players who have gone to state, in fact there #1 was state champ last two years. Highlight was Rumeal Setts winning a three set match, 3rd doubles loosing in 3 set battle and Agassi Mila in tight match. In my opinion the results did not show how close the match was.The match results are as:
1st Singles Chad Stearns lost 0-6, 0-6
2nd Singles Rob Storrick lost 0-6, 0-6
3rd Singles Rumeal Setts won 6-3, 1-6, 10-8
4th Singles Agassi Mila lost 2-6, 3-6
1st Doubles Bobby Tellander/Adam Nelson lost 4-6, 3-6
2nd Doubles Matt Tellander/Hangi Lee lost 1-6, 0-6
3rd Doubles Matt Morehouse/Alex Krutchen 6-4, 2-6, 8-10
The next match we went up against White bear Lake who usually has a pretty tough team. The highlight for me was watching Jonathon Miller and Brandon Keller win at 3rd double for their first varsity win. During the tennis season Jonathon and Brandon work extremely hard and to win against White Bear Lake andshows how hard they have been working. Results are as follows:
1st Singles Chad Stearns won 6-1, 6-3
2nd Singles Bobby Tellander won 6-1, 6-0
3rd Singles Agassi Mila won 6-2, 6-0
4th Singles Adam Nelson won 6-0, 6-0
1st Doubles Rob Storrick/Rumeal Setts won 6-3, 6-1
2nd Doubles Matt Morehouse/Alex Krutchen lost 0-6, 7-5, 8-10
3rd Doubles Jonathon Miller/Brandon Keller won 6-2, 6-2
The last match of the day was against Minneapolis Southwest who beat us last year and we were playing them for third place. Every year Minneapolis Southwest has a very good team and after two tough matches were the Cardinals ready to face a tough match. I had some players that requested to play some different spots in the lineup and thought we would roll with the dice on this match. What was great was watching Alex Krutchen winning his first varsity match in singles and watching Rob Storrick play with a player he has never had in Matt Tellander playing a pretty good match at 2nd doubles. Also watching Agassi Mila win at 2nd singles a spot he has never played before winning was really great and especially listening to his brother Addison cheering him on. Addison is soon becoming our number one fan, thanks for your support we really appreciate it. I want to thank Mr. Tellander for helping with grilling today and taking various pictures through out the day. Results are as follows:
1st SinglesRumeal Settswon 6-0, 6-3
2nd Singles Agassi Mila won 7-5, 6-4
3rd Singles Adam Nelsonwon 6-4, 6-1
4th Singles Alex Krutchen won 7-5, 6-3
1st Doubles Chad Stearns/Bobby Tellanderwon 6-3, 6-1
2nd Doubles Rob Storrick/Matt Tellander won 6-3, 6-1
3rd Doubles Hangi Lee/Matt Morehouse won 6-2, 6-2
On the season the Cardinals are 9-3 with two matches next week. Great job today we found out that we have more flexibility in our lineup then I initially thought.

The boys tennis team came across an extremely tough opponent in Elk River. In the current rankings Elk River was #4 in the state in the latest polls. Highlights in the match was Rumeal Setts who won at 3rd singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a hard tough battle. Rumeal had to utilize all of his shots against his opponent to win his match. At 3rd doubles Alex Krutchen and Matt Morehouse lost a tough match at 6-4, 6-4. In each set they were up and Elk River battled back to take the sets. Results from yesterday match are as follows:
1st Singles Rob Storrick lost 2-6, 2-6
2nd Singles Chad Stearns lost 2-6, 5-7
3rd Singles Rumeal Setts won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3

The Coon Rapids Varsity tennis team beat Osseo today 7-0. It was nice way to rebound form a 6-1 loss to Wayzata on Monday. The players really worked on what part of their game didn't go well on Monday in today's match. The next toughest match of the season is on Thursday at Elk River who in today's paper was ranked 4th in the state. Coon Rapids was ranked in the top ten but was mentioned as a team to watch along with Centennial and Totino Grace who the Cardinals play next week. The results are as follows:

The boys tennis team hit a stumbling block todayagainst one of the top teams in Wayzata high school. The Varsity team lost 6-1, winning their one point at 1st doubles. Bobby Tellander and Adam Nelson won 7-5, 6-3 in a match where they were behind in the first set until they broke serve to take the lead to win the set and take a commanding lead throughout the whole second set. Rob Storrick played a tough match where he was up in each set and on many occasions was ahead in other games but couldn't win the key points. It was a good match to build on for the rest of season. Cardinals play at home today against Osseo:
1st Singles Chad Stearns lost 2-6, 1-6

4/20/10
The boys tennis team continued their winning ways by beating Anoka today at their courts. We changed the lineups today to see how various players would by moving players up and playing players in singles versus doubles. The highlight for me today was watchinghow patient Matt Tellander was at 4th singles today. Those of you that have seen Matt play before knows he likes to end points quick but there were rallies of 20 shots or more on many occassions. Matt was working points in using all of his shots during his 6-2, 6-2 victory. It was also nice watching 3rd doubles bring up their intensity level up where they beat their opponents 7-5, 6-0 at 3rd doubles. The varsity team improved their record to 5-0 and 3-0 in the Northwest Suburban Conference. results are as follows:
1st SinglesChad Stearns lost 3-6, 2-6

4/15/10
The Boys tennis teamhad their most exciting win of the season by beating Maple Grove 4-3 at the windiest conditions of the year. At one point we were down 1-3 with 2nd singles, 4th singles and 1st doubles needing to win. Chad Stearns beat his opponent 6-2, 6-2 and then Agassi MIla with a few suggetions from Ted Stearns (volunteer tennis coach) and myself won 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 bringing the match tied at 3-3 with first doubles still playing. Once match became tied they were in the third set and Adam Nelson hearing the match was tied 3-3 still played like he had ice in his viens. Adam and Bobby won in dramatic fashion 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 sealing the victory for a 4-3 win. It was an extemely tough match but yet one we needed to get us prepared for furture matches. The boys beat the Champlin Park Rebels today at their courts in extremely windy conditions to bring their record to 3-0 and 1-0 in the NWSC. Adam started out the match down 1st set and came back and won in the next 2 sets. Rumeal Setts played a tough match at first doubles and lost a close match at 1st singles. Results are as follows:
