On Saturday the Coon Rapids team opened up 2019 tennis season at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. In the first round we competed against Buffalo. The tennis team lost to Buffalo 6-1 with Anna Beczkalo winning at 4th singles 6-3, 6-2. This was Anna's 1st varsity win and varsity match, she played great moving her opponent around in all areas of the box. 3rd Doubles of Ella Giorgi and Sophia Murrillo lost in 3 sets. This was also Ella's first varsity match. Anna Samit at 3rd singles lost in close match also. 2nd round we played against Cretin and lost 5-2. 1st doubles of Carly and Emma won in a 3rd set super tiebreaker. Ellen and Jersie won in straight sets which was great to see. Normally Ellen plays singles and is shows that she can play high levels at doubles.Alyssa Ross and Kaydee Hinn played their first varsity matches and lost in a close match. Anna at 4th had another close match. Singles are doing good things we just need to close out on our points when we have the opposing players pinched in the corners. 3rd round we played against Hibbing and lost 4-3. Anna Samit was on a mission at 3rd singles beating her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Anna B won also in straight sets. Ella G and Kaydee H won their first varsity match in the super tiebreaker. Ella and Kaydee kept attacking their opponents by coming into the net which made Hibbing start to play from the baseline. I asked them if they wanted to play back from the baseline (hoping they would want to keep attacking) since Hibbing was doing this and at the same time they said they want to keep getting into the net. They won the super tiebreaker 10-4. As the day went along our players competed hard. Our first conference match of the season is against Elk River on Tuesday. Results are as follows:

The girls tennis team on Tuesday and competed against Elk River. We knew going into the match was going to be a tough match. At the start of the match I knew they were a good team. We ended up loosing 6-1. There were some highlights during the match. Anna Beczkalo won in an epic match which the Elk River said. Anna lost the first set 6-7 and than came back to win 7-5 in the 2nd. The match was already decided so we had them play a supertiebreaker for the 3rd. Anna won this 15-13. First doubles played a pretty good match loosing 6-3, 6-3. 2nd doubles lost 6-0, 6-4 in what was great seeing them play a much better 2nd set. On Wednesday the tennis team played against Monticello which is a team in our section. The lady Carsinals came out on top by wining 5-2. Grace Hannula won her first match playing at 1st singles. Kaydee Hinn and Sophia Murillo won their match at 3rd doubles. In the second match of the tri angular we went up against Saint Michael Albertville which is also in our section. As the match was going on we knew we were in a fight as STMA took a commanding lead by winning the first 2 singles spots with our players winning only 1 games. Anna Samit at 3rd singles lost 6-3, 6-2 giving STMA a 3-0 lead. As these were finishing up we had won the first sets at 4th singles and all the doubles spots. Anna Beczkalo won in straight sets bringing the match score to 1-3. All 3 doubles were in tight 2nd sets. We ended closing out 1st and 2nd doubles bringing the match score to 3 - 3. It came down to 3rd doubles wining in the 2nd set tiebreaker.  Ella Giorgi who played volley ball last year has helped us out in our doubles game. Currently the tennis team is at 2-4 and we are starting to get a handle on were our players will be playing. Anna  Beczkalo at 4th singles is 5-1. This past week the girls tennis team lost 2 matches against Totino Grace and Centennial. Going into these matches I thought we would have a chance which we did even though the score does show it. On Tuesday we lost to Totino Grace 6-1. 1st doubles had a great set and than Totino started lobbing to get us off the net. Smart strategy and I had our players start stopping around service line but they go a little frustrated with this. 2nd doubles had the same thing. Kaytlyn had a great match at 2nd even though she lost. Anna B won again at 4th singles. Thursday match we lost to Centennial 6-1. The girls tennis team played 2 tough matches yesterday in 90 degree temperature with over 90 degree heat index. In the first match the cardinals went against Roseville which is one of the better teams we are going against. It was tight match all of the way through. The Coon Rapids tennis team competed against Blaine at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Last year the tennis team lost to Blaine 7-0. Going into the match I told the players that the match would be 4-3 for us or Blaine. As the match was going we won quickly at 3rd singles with Anna B and Blaine won at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd doubles. With that being said we had 1st doubles, 2nd doubles and 4th singles still playing and needing them to win. 1st doubles of Carly Nelson and Emma Newton won in straight sets in what was close match. Anna Samit at 4th singles won her first set pretty one sided and her opponent played a great 2nd set wining 6-4. While Anna was playign her 3rd set our 2nd doubles of Jersie Schreder and Kaytlyn Syverson were in their 2nd set. Blaine won their 2nd set bringing another match to a 3rd set. So the match points are 2-3 and Coon Rapids needs both points to win. At the start of her 3rd set I suggested a couple of items and I thought this would make her 3rd set a little easier. Anna ended up wining her 3rd set 6-1 bringing our match score to 3-3. In the 3rd set with 2nd doubles and I asked our team to get serves and returns in this would be the difference in the match. It was a very windy day and what ever team could handle this would win their match. Kaytlyn and Jersie played a smart 3rd set closing out a 4-3 win for the Cardinals tennis team. We are playing better and with section play starting in a week and a half we are getting close. Currently we are 7-8

Results are as follows:

1st Singles: Ellen Everhart lost  6-3, 6-3

2nd Singles Grace Hannula lost 6-2, 6-4

1st Doubles Carly Nelson won 6-3, 6-3

                     Emma Newton

2nd Doubles Jersie Schreder won

                        Kaytlyn Syverson 7-5, 4-6, 6-3

3rd Doubles Ella Giorgi lost 6-4, 6-3

                      Kelsie Goldmen

The Coon Rapids tennis team beat Irondale 7-0 in the cross over match on Thursday at the Bob Pivec courts. In discussion with Mike Walseth it was decided that we were going to play all doubles for our match. In doing this we were going to play all doubles in giving some players on our section a match under there belt. We had 3 matches that went 3 sets so the score was actually closer than the end result. 1st, 3rd and 4th doubles lost their 1st set and all 3 won their next 2 sets. Emma Bolin and Alyssa Ross also won their first varsity match playing 7th doubles. In our last 7 matches we are 4-3 with 2 of those matches it came down to a super tiebreaker for us to win. One of those matches it came to 14-12 so we are playing much better. We are currently 8-9 with Osseo today and section seeding meeting tonight. Results are as follows:

Yesterday the tennis team lost a very close match to Rogers in the second round of sections. I am so honored to coach such a great group of young ladies. It was a very interesting match in that we played Rogers earlier in the season and all spots were the same except their 4th singles. It was a case of reversal of fortunes in our results. Last time we played them we lost at 2nd doubles and 3rd singles this time we won. In addition, last time we won at 1st and 3rd doubles this time they won. As the match was going on it came down to our 2nd and 3rd doubles that we needed to win. Both matches went to 3 sets with 2nd doubles wining in the 3rd set to bring the overall score to 3 and 3. It all came down to 3rd doubles to pull out the victory and we came out on the short end of 7-5 lose at the 3rd set. We had our chances and Ella and Kelsie played their hearts out. As a team we made considerable progress and improved as the season went along. Individual sections start on October 15th with 2 players playing singles and 2 doubles team representing the tennis team. Results from our match as follows:

Coon Rapids    3                  Rogers  4

1st Singles   Ellen Everhart    lost        7-6, 6-0

2nd Singles Grace Hannula   lost        6-2, 6-3

The girls tennis team beat Osseo at the Bob Pivec tennis courts yesterday 4-3. We started the match out with two quick wins at 4th singles and 3rd doubles. Osseo came back with a win at 2nd singles with Coon Rapids winning at 2nd doubles. The match score was 3-2 with Maddie playing at 3rd singles and 1st doubles of Carly and Emma. Each point was in the third set. Maddie ended up loosing in the 3rd and and 1st doubles ended up winning in the 3rd set to secure the win for the cardinals tennis team. This was great to see 1st doubles winning a third set after dropping several 3 setters lately. They are a good team and they showed today in their 3rd set. Today we play Irondale for our cross over match and sections start next week. Results are as follows:

Coon Rapids   4              Osseo   3

Yesterday the girls tennis team beat Andover in which was one of my most exciting tennis matches that I have been involved in during my years of coaching. It was a 4-3 victory with 3 matches going 3 sets. Kaytlyn lost a 3 set close match in which the games were going back and forth during the whole match. At 3rd doubles Jersie and Anna they won in 3 sets. They lost the first set 6-1 and than won the next two sets 6-1. I suggested to the players to do something different in the start of the second set. As they were playing they started hitting better shots and before you know it they were in the end of third set. Mya and Megan won in 3 sets. As they were in their 2nd set the match was tied 3 all. They were up in the second at 4-1 when Andover started making shots which they ended up winning 7-5. In the 3rd set  the games were going back and forth. There were times in the 3rd set that Andover and our team had match points but the other team fought off the points. In the tie breaker each team had 5 match points when finally Mya and Megan hit some great shots wining their match at 14-12. I was so proud on how hard they competed. The best thing they did not know they were the deciding point and the joy on their face was priceless. Results are as follows:

Coon Rapids 4            Andover  3

1st Singles     Ellen Everhart      lost    6-1,6-1

Tennis results for last week. Last week was quite a busy week for the lady cardinals tennis team. We started the week out by going against Blaine which we lost 7-0 but again on paper we had quite a few matches that were pretty close. It came down to our players needing to close out the points. We have the tendency to set the points up great in singles and doubles but we miss the next shot. All spots were very competitive even the score doesn't show this. On Thursday we beat Irondale which we had two players getting their first varsity win at 3rd doubles with Megan Spielbauer and Anna Samit. They lost their first set and made some adjustments won the next 2 sets. This past weekend we lost 3 matches all with the same score at 6-1. Two of the teams we played are currently ranked in the top 10 in the state in class A, Osakis and Crookston. Again same situation occurred with quite a few matches close just not closing out in the end. We competed hard all day long and once we play out our points a little smarter we will do good. Last week we had a match against Irondale and as the match was going we won 5 of 7 first sets in 5 positions. The rain came and we did not get to finish the match. On the next day we played against Park Center for the second time this year. It was our cross over match since we are in two divisions. Earlier in the year we played them so it would be interested to see how we would do. We won 7-0 and we only gave up 11 games where earlier in the year Park Center won 22 games. The seeding meeting for sections is on Tuesday and we start play on Wednesday. We ended up the regular season 10-7. Results for last Park Centers match is as follows:

The girls tennis team finished out the week 1-1. On Tuesday they lost to Elk River 7-0. The Elks were as strong as I thought they would be. We lost every match in straight sets. At second doubles Helen Nelson and Carly playing their first doubles match together lost 7-6, 6-4 in what was a very entertaining match. Jessica Emmans and Olivia Farley played also very well at 3rd doubles. On Thursday the lady cardinals played against Andover and won 4-3. I knew going into the match it would be tough not having Helen Nelson who was home sick. Elen Everhart won in 3 sets and probably the best I have seen all year came at 4th singles. Grace Hannula was down 0-3 in the first set and 1-4 the second. She came back to win 6-3, 6-4 as she continues to learn how to play out points she will be solid contributor to our team in the next 4 years. The team overall record is 9-7. Results are as follows:

Results from tennis matches from last week. On Thursday of last week the Lady Cardinals played against Osseo. As the match was going rain came and we had to finish the match on Friday. Going into the match we were ahead in each spot and once the match was complete we beat Osseo 7-0. On Ssaturday we had a round robin tournament against Roseville, Rogers and Totino Grace. In the first match we played Roseville which was going to be a tough match. They have a solid core of young players in their singles lineup. So I was hoping we could win a spot their and sweep the doubles. We ended up sweeping the doubles but couldn't get a singles point. In the Rogers match which was going to be tough match since they are in our section it was important to win this. We ended up wining 3 points in the super tiebreaker to give us the 4-3 win. The Coon Rapids girls tennis team played 2 matches in the last 2 days against St. Francis and Centennial. We beat St. Francis 4-3 and loosing to Centennial 6-1. Some positive notes out of the two matches is Maddi Giorgi is playing some good tennis at 1st singles as well as our first doubles of Nelson and Everhart. I really think we are starting to play some better tennis. If we continue to work in practice in what we are doing in our doubles and having a plan in what we are doing in our singles game we should do fine. Last Wednesday the Lady Cardinals tennis team lost close match to Blaine 4-3. In 3 of our singles we had extremely close first sets and lost the second sets more one sided. I am hoping that our players believe that if there is a close set they can play against their opponent. Mya and Maddie lost first set at firs doubles and came back to win in straight sets. On Thursday we beat Park Center 7-0. In playing their first varsity match Ava Lovik (senior) and Emma Newton (freshman) won their first varsity match. Singles played pretty good all across the lineup. On wednesday the girls tennis played Spring Lake Park at their courts and beat them 5-2, brining their record to 3-2. Every match went in straight sets. On Thursday we played against Anoka which I knew would be a tough match. We lost 6-1, with our players competing hard. Emily Everhart played a great match beating her opponent in straight sets. I'm hoping she will believe that she can play at that position. At this point of the season there are a few items we need to work on. Once we do this we should win a few more pointsvwhich equate to more Varsity points won. Yesterday the Coon Rapids Cardinals beat Cretin Derham in an exciting match at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. In the match Grace Hannula was moved to 3rd doubles with Jordan Keller. During their match they were hitting ball pretty good but their movement put them in bad positions during the points resulting in loosing their first set 6-0. Prior to the second set I told them to both play back on their serve and when we were serving. I told them imagine you are both playing singles but with each other, well they ended up wining the second set 6-2. The super tiebreaker we won 10-4 giving Grace her first varsity win. Maddie Giorgi lost in 3 and Maddie Westra and Mya won in 3. In fact prior to Maddie and Mya starting their 3rd I told them that the match was tied and that if they win we win. Maddie said "I didn't want to know but they ended up wining 12-10 to secure a win for the cardinals. Results are as follows:

Today the tennis team lost a tennis match to Champlin Park 5-2. It was our first tennis match of the season and it was their 4th. To play a tough match in our first match of the season was tough for our players. We won at 1st and second doubles. Both of these matches we won in 3 sets. Our singles played hard but lost in straight sets in each of their matches. Having our round robin tournament rained out put us at a disadvantage not know what we needed to work when playing against other schools. Results are as follows:

2nd Singles Mya Mochinski lost 6-4, 6-0

On Wednesday the lady cardinals played their first round of sections at the Bob Pivec courts against Anoka. Earlier in the year we beat them 6-1 but there were several points that went three sets. Helen Nelson won in 3 sets with the 3rd set being 6-0. First doubles beat the Anoka team in close match 7-5, 7-5. In doing so they beat the 8th seeded team in individuals in the doubles tournament. I hope the Emily and Karly realize they are a good team and have the potential to go far in sections. We will next play Delano who is the 1 seed in our section. Our next match was going to be our round robin tournament against Roseville, Rogers and Delano. This is was going to be a tough test since Cretin beat us in the first match of the year 5-2 and Roseville beat them 6-1. Rogers is a team in our section as well as Delano. Delano has only lost once during the season. In our first match of the day we took on Roseville. In our matches my intention was not to play all of our singles in 3 matches in the singles lineup. We had Maddi at 1st singles and Karly Westra playing 2nd singles in her first singles match of the year. Alli Bauer and Helen Nelson played at 1st doubles. Our doubles played really well with wins at all 3 spots. 3rd doubles played great loosing their first set 2-6 and coming back winning the next 2 sets. In our last match of the day we played against Delano who I thought would be our toughest match and sure enough it was. They beat us 6-1, with us winning at 2nd doubles. It was our first time playing Delano in my 17 years of coaching and it shows with them in our section and Wayzata things we need to work on for us to get back to section finals. On Tuesday the lady Cardinals went to Elk River who is undefeated in conference play and we lost 5-2. Even though our singles players lost in straight sets players competed hard. Lynn played 1st singles and won 2 games off of the number 7 ranked player in the state. Ally Bisset lost 6-2, 6-1 but she was out there longest out of all of our singles players. Ally had several games to deuce, once she starts winning the key games she will certainly win a lot more matches. Our 1 and 2 doubles won in straight sets against 2 doubles teams had only lost once each all year. They stayed with in their strengths and played great doubles. Our next match is against Osseo. In our first round matches we going to be competing against Crookston who in the latest ranking were ranked 8th in the state class A. I knew this was going to be a tough match and sure enough it was. We had 3 matches that went extremely long with Maddi and Lynn. In both of their matches we lost the first set and ended up wining the next 2 sets.  We won the match 5-2 bringing our record to 5-4. Maddie Westra

In the last match of the day we played Alexandria which I knew was going to be a tough match. I learned a lesson to today that I need to manage our players a little better in regards to not keeping some of our players in singles for 3 matches so I do not where them out.  Also Helen and Karly received a great compliment from a gentlemen who has been running the girls and boys state tennis tournament for in the excess of 25 years. He told them that when they were down 5-2 in their second set he saw it in their eyes that they knew they were going to win. He was watching them when I was talking to them on the change over. If our girls would believe in their ability even when they are loosing, knowing they still can compete at a high level and maybe even win we will continue to have a great season. Helen, Maddi and Karly won all of their matches. We lost to Alexandria 5-2 bringing our record to 6-5. Results are as follows:

1st Singles Allison Bauer lost 6-2, 6-4
2nd Singles Maddi Giorgi won 6-3, 6-2

Devin Vanseth
3rd Doubles Olivia Farley lost 7-6, 6-4
Maddie Westra

Our next match is against Elk River on Tuesday

The lady Cardinals played Anoka on September 3rd at the Bob Pivec courts in what was one of the hottest days that we have had a match. In addition, Allison Bauer was gone in New York watching some tennis at the US Open improving her game. The lady Cardinals won 6-1 in what was a close score. We won 3 matches in 3 sets with Maddi Giorgi and Carly Nelson showing a lot of grit. At the start of her 3 set I talked to her and I asked to make a couple of changes and to show her opponent that she is the best player on the court. Well Maddi certainly did that by winning 6-0 in the 3rd. Carly lost her 1st set 6-2 at 4th singles and I told her to take her approach shots towards out of the middle and follow the ball into the court. Carly was volleying and taking her overheads so good she won the next 2 sets. Olivia Farley at 2nd doubles won her 1st match at 2nd doubles and it looks like Devin and Olivia have a good thing going on at this position. Results are as follows:

1st Singles Maddi Giorgi won 6-2, 2-6, 6-0

Next match will be against Centennial which will be a tough match at there site.

--------------------------------------------------------

On Thursday the girls tennis team lost to Maple Grove 5-2 in which it was a very close match. Most of our points were extremely close. Hopefully as we get into the main part of our season they will believe in there abilities and put a plan into their match. Helen Nelson is perfect example of what she needed to do in her match. She realized during her match the she needed to attack her opponents backhand and get to the net. In our doubles we need to anticipate once our opponents hit the ball and hit our first volley to the person who is nearest to the net. Our overall record is 2-3 with Spring Lake Park next Tuesday. Results are as follows:

1st Singles Allison Bauer lost 6-1, 7-5
2nd Singles Maddi Giorgi lost 6-4, 6-3

Carly Nelson

----------------------------------------------------------------

The Coon Rapids girls tennis started out their conference play today against Totino Grace at their courts. Prior to the match I moved Helen Nelson to singles which made our lineup so strong. In the 4 singles points we only gave up 7 games wining all 4 singles points and winning 3rd doubles. In 1st and 2nd doubles we lost in straight sets but each of the second sets we made it extremely close. It was nice for our players to win and especially JV and C squads also won. Our next match is on Thursday against Maple Grove at the Bob Pivec courts. This will be a tough match for us since we lost to them last year 4-3 at their place. our overall record is 2-2 with results as follows:

1st Singles Allison Bauer won 6-3, 6-0

The girls tennis team started there 2015 tennis season off on August 22nd. In the first match the lady cardinals went up against Cretin Derham. In our second match we played Wayzata which will be one of the top teams in the state this upcoming year. When our sections were realigned I thought it was important to play agaisnt some teams that we normally would not see. There were some close matches with Lynn Hillsheim and Carly Nelson. In each of their 1st sets we were able to push Wayzata, as well as our 1st doubles played a great match. We lost to Wayzata 7-0, results are as follows:

Coaches Corner

Today the girls tennis team finished their individual sections with some exciting results. In singles Karly Westra played the number 3 singles players from Champlin Park and lost 6-1, 6-3 in which Karly made some changes in her game. Her second set turned out much better than her first. Allison Bauer won her first round match against player she lost to earlier in team sections. In her second round match as with what Karly did Alli, started attacking the net which helped her in the second set. Alli lost 7-6 in the second but I think she knows she can play all sorts of styles in her game. Tina and Hannah lost to the 4th seed Mounds view Mustangs 6-3, 6-3. They played very tough but lost some key points which led to their defeat. Heidi and Andrea ended up winning the doubles sections with out loosing a set during the whole tournament. The state individual tournament starts next Thursday at 10:00am at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota. On the attachment is the link for Individual tennis tournament.

------------------------------------------------------------------
The girls tennis season lost last night in the section finals to the 9th ranked team Mounds View 6-1 in which was a much closer match than the score reflects. The match started out where most of the matches the Mustangs were up 3-0 or 2-1. Coach Hirte and I started talking to the players after the first 3 games have been played. We understood that players might be nervous but we told them once you start moving your feet the games will start getting closer, sure enough they did. The lady Cardinals made the match very tight and each position we pushed the Mustangs. To have a record of 21-6 and last year 21-4 the girls tennis players are doing something special here at Coon Rapids. 42- 10 in 2 years share of conference title last year and make it to the section finals, WOW.  Each spot competed hard and represented Coon Rapids at a high level. I am so proud and honored to coach these young ladies. We now are entering into the Individual regions starting next Monday lets see if we can get anybody through to the state tournament. Great job this season cardinal tennis players

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today the Lady Tennis Team beat Blaine 6-1 in the semifinals of the 5AA tournament. Last week the lady cardinals beat Blaine 5-2 and to play them again in such tough match was very impressive. Every player worked the points and never gave up during their match. Maddi Giorgi probably played her best match of the season beating a girl that she knew pretty good. I complimented her afte she was done and she said I was not going to lose which was great to see that out fo her. All doubles won in straight sets with second wining in a tight first set 7-6 (9-7 in tiebreaker). Today the tennis team will play Mounds View which are the 9th ranked team in the latest polls. If the lady cardinals believe we could make the match tight in various spots. Results are as follows:

3rd Singles Hannah Naegele CR 6-3, 6-2

The girls Tennis Team beat Fridley on Friday morning at Public Indoor Tennis Center. With how the weather is we had to go in and play our first round match. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The girls tennis team ended the regular season by beating Blaine today at the Bob Pivec courts 5-2. Playing a tough tennis team leading into sections made me a little worried. I put a challenge to the players to hopefully use this as a spring board going into section play. We were missing Tina, so we moved some players around at 2nd and 3rd doubles. Ending the regular season at 18-5 with all of the players we graduated from last years team exceeded my expectations on how good we would do this year. Tomorrow we play Fridley at home and if we should win we play on Thursday. Results are as follows:

1st Singles Allison Bauer Blaine 7-5, 6-4
2nd Singles Heidi Hannula CR 6-3, 6-1
3rd Singles Hannah Naegele CR 6-0, 6-1
4th Singles Maddi Giorgi CR 6-1, 6-1

In the second rounds played Roseville, which would be the toughest match of the day. They have also played common opponents that might be important later on during the seeding season. Three matches went three sets that our players stepped up their game. During Helen's match I asked her to raise her level of play after her first set and play a little differently. Boy Helen took the match to her opponent. Tina and Karly played a slow first set and also raised their level of play in the preceding sets. Alli had another tough match. Alli didn't win her first two matches but I hope she realizes that she is certainly good enough to compete with the top players from other teams. Results are as follows:

This weekend Varsity and JV went to Alexandria to play in their fall round robin. Last year when we went to play in this tournament temperature was around 85 degrees with high humidity. In the last round we played Alexandria which I knew going into the match it would be the toughest match of the day. Last year we lost 4-3 so I was hoping to give them a lost this year. As we did in other matches we changed our lineup around again hoping the match ups would be in our favor. Hannah Naegele played what I believe one of her best matches of the year beating a player who destroyed us last year. Heidi and Andrea were the deciding match at first doubles and wining their match in straight sets. In addition, Tina, Andrea, Bailey and Sara were undefeated in the tournament. Today the girls tennis team beat a tough Centennial team 5-2. Highlights in the match was Maddie Giorgi at 4th singles. Maddie lost a tough 1st set and was down 4-1 in the second and came back to win. Talking to Maddie on the changeover I suggested that she do a couple of items to her game and sure enough Maddie executed her shots. Mr. Pivec you would of been proud how she was moving the ball around on the court. Third doubles had a very close match wining their first set in a tiebreaker 14-12, which I do not remember the last time I saw a match like that. On Thursday we play Elk River which will be a big match for us based on well they are doing right into the season. Girls Tennis team lost to Maple Grove today 4-3. Going into the match I knew it was going to be tough due to how their players played out points last year. Their singles hit short balls to bring opponents in than lob. We needed to be patient and their doubles 1 is up and 1 is back, we need to be able to understand this formation. We will work on this more, results are as follows:

1st Singles Allison Bauer lost 3-6, 0-6

Next match on August 26th against Spring Lake Park

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today the girls tennis team played 2 matches at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. In the first match we played Princeton which I knew it would be a tough match. Going into the match I found out that Hedi Hannula was cleared from her carpal tunnel surgery. This morning I had Hedi come to the courts to see how she was hitting the balls and after a hour I determined she was more than effective in our lineup. We lost to Princeton 6-1 with Heidi and Karly wining at 2nd doubles. Andrea Rehm lost a close match at 4th singles and 1st doubles lost in a super tibebreaker. After Princeton we played Totino Grace in our first conference match of the season beating the eagles 7-0. We won four points in 3 sets. 3 of the matches were pretty much one sided. Emily Fish won her first varsity match at 3rd doubles, Maddi G won in 3 sets and after being frustrated with her level of play in the 1st set and she sure stepped it up in the other 2 sets. Karly W played at 1st doubles showing that she belongs. Results are as follows:

Ladies great job today and lets continue our play and improve on the items that did not go so well.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today the girls tennis team played in their first matches of the season with a 2-1 record. Having Hedi Hannula not in the lineup recovering from carpal tunnel surgery on her wrist. Heidi made it to the state tennis tourney so we know her teammates are going to have to step up, which they did today. In the first match we played Hibbing where won 7-0, with Hannah Naegele stepped playing first singles and won in straight sets. Sarah McDonald and Julie Mortensen won in straight sets at second doubles and Bailey Ryan won her first varsity match at 3rd doubles with Karly Westra. In our next match we played Cretin where we won 5-2 with a couple of exciting matches. Karly Westra won in 3 sets playing at 3rd singles. Ally Bisset playing her first varsity match won in dramtic fashion at 4th singles. Ally was down 4-9 in the super tiebreaker 4-9 and winning 7 straight points taking the match 11-9 in the 3rd set. In addition, Ally played this same player earlier in the day and lost. In our last match we played Rogers a team in our section where we lost 5-2. Highlight was Ally Bauer winning in 3 sets at 1st singles. This win will give us a boost in two ways, that Ally can hit with anyone and will give us flexability in our lineup. Alli Bauer and Karly won all three matches today. Everybody that stayed with Varsity played at least one match and there is no doubt Emily and Lynn H will get their varsity wins this year. Detailed Results

The girls tennis team lost to Centennial today 5-2. I first want to thank all of parents for their support and coming to all of the matches. It was a great season ending up 21-4 and co-conference champs. It was truly my honor to work with a great group of young ladies. It is a little hard to know that our team is done but we have made great strides. Out of our 13 players on the region team we have 8 players returning. Our 5 seniors on the team our Emily Bauer, Lauren Beckman, Micheala (Rosie) Grainger (sorry Rosie I have wanting to say this for a while), Sarah Brinda and Shelby Swope. Our two JV's played extremely well as well as our C Team. In our match with Centennial we lost two matches in 3 sets. Next Monday we participate in individual regions with two in singles and two doubles teams. Results are as follows:

1st Singles         Emily Bauer               2-6, 2-6

2nd Singles        Heidi Hannula           3-6, 3-6

3rd Singles         Sarah Brinda            3-6, 2-6

4th Singles         Hannah Naegele       6-3, 2-6, 3-6

Again ladies I do appreciate everything you gave to our team and keep your head up I strongly believe you laid the foundation for future teams. Sometimes you take a step backwards before you can move forward.

The girls tennis team beat Champlin Park today 4-3 with Heidi Hannula wining in the third set to secure the match. It was the second time this year that Heidi was the last point out with the tennis match tied and she closed out the third set. It was a total team effort with two singles and two doubles winning their point. Coon Rapids plays Centennial tomorrow at the Bob Pivec courts. GO Cardinals and Mr. Pivec and Mr. Riha thanks for all of your support over the years our program would not be where it is at today if it wasn't for you. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The girls tennis team beat Armstrong at the Bob Pivec tennis courts today 5-2. I knew going into the match it was going to be tough and as the match went along it was a tight match. Highlights for me was how the doubles kept attacking the net and first doubles played extremely well today. Also, Maddi Giorgi won her first varsity match today. You could tell at first she was a little nervous but as the match went along she became more comfortable. Maddi is more fond at playing at the baseline but she did great and Tina showed her leadership today. The cardinals play Maple Grove which will be a very tough match at the Bob Pivec courts. If the lady cards can keep the ball on the court we will be competitive with Maple Grove.

Go Cards and lets play cardinal tennis

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The girls tennis team played a tough match today against Anoka Tornadoes in what was a tough match. As expected coach Wicks the head coach from Anoka had his players ready to play. Emily Bauer played a tight match to start with but pulled things together being down 2-5 in the first set to win 7-5 6-3. Alli Bauer lost the first set and came back to win the next two sets. First doubles follwed Alli's lead by loosing the first set and winning the next two. Next week the Cardinals play Armstrong at the Bob Pivec courts and than finish out the regular season with Maple Grove. Both matches will be tough matches for the Lady Cardinals. As we have been the whole year there is a few things we need to work on and then incorporate this into our next two matches. Results are as follows:

The cardinals won every match in straight sets except for 1st doubles lost in 3. At 3rd doubles today Scout Kirby and Julie Mortensen played their first varsity match of the season and played very good. The duo attacked the return of serve and moved well together going to the net. The Cardinals next play host to Anoka Tornadoes which will be a tough match. The Coon Rapids girls tennis team played in their invite today against Roseville, White Bear Lake and St. Paul Central. In the first round Coon Rapids was going against Roseville who last year beat us in a close match. The highlight was first doubles winning their match after loosing the first match. The second match I moved Heidi and Emily into doubles which strengthen our doubles but put  the challenge to our singles for someone to win a point. Rosie Grainger played what I thought was her best match of the season to win the 4th point for the Cardinals. Lauren and Helen won their 2nd match in a row in the super tie breaker. The last match Coon Rapids won all 7 points. Not loosing a match today was Lauren and Helen in doubles, Emily and Heidi doubles/singles and the combo platter of Tina/Shelby and Karly. With the 3 wins today we continue against Totino Grace, Park Center and Anoka which will all be tough matches. Every time we play these schools the coaches always have their players bring their A game. Our overall record is 14-3 Results are as follows:

Everyone played some solid tennis. On Saturday we will be hosting the Coon Rapids Invite with Roseville, St. Paul Central and White Bear Lake at the Bob Pivec courts. We need to play at the top of our game with these schools coming in . They are all having good seasons, so Cardinals will have to be ready. Results are as follows:

The girls tennis team went to Alexandria this past weekend and played in a round robin tournament against Crookston, Sauk Centre and Alexandria. The format of the matches were to play the sets in a no add scoring format and if sets were split the 3rd set was a 7 point tiebreaker. With the temperature extremely hot I was going into the matches with 11 players and I knew I was going to have to rotate players around. Several highlights for me was having every player win at least once. Allison Bauer won all 3 of her matches in addition each match was in singles. Emily Bauer won her 3rd match in 3 sets with each one being in tiebreakers. It was one of her strongest matches of the season. Heidi Hannula won the deciding point when we had 1st and 2nd singles playing when we needed 1 more point to close out the match. At the present time the Cardinals are 7-1. Highlights was with first singles when Heidi Hannula won her match in 3 sets. During her third set Heidi was so determined to pull out the match after playing for over two hours. Another highlight was with 3rd doubles winning 6-0, 6-0, great job doubles. Today Cardinals beat Andover Huskies 5-2 in what was a much closer score than the match showed. As a coach I remember from Mr. Pivec that any time your players do better as the match goes along it is a good day. Emily at first played one of the top players in the state and probably played her best match of the year, especially after she was at the open this past weekend watching some top players in the world. 1st doubles played a very good team and lost the 1st set 6-0 and lost 2nd set 6-4 (that is stepping it up in play). As 4th singles and 2nd doubles were playing the Cardinals were up 3-2. Allison Bauer lost 1st set 2-6 and as she was going in the second made a few suggestions in her game and she ended up 7-5, 6-2 to close out the match for the Cardinals. 2nd doubles won 1st set 6-4, and than lost 7-5 second set. Prior to start of the third set I told our players to pick a spot on returns and move to the ball as they are closing in the net which they won 6-3. Ladies outstanding job today and lets go after Blaine tomorrow it will be a tough match. Results are as follows:
Coon Rapids    5         Andover    2

1st Singles      Emily Bauer      1-6, 2-6

2nd Singles    Heidi Hannula    6-2, 6-1

Go Cardinals
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Coon Rapids tennis team played their first NWSC tennis match at Champlin Park yesterday. Going into match we knew it was going to be a tough match. Last year the Rebels beat the Cardinals twice so we hoping to bring our A game for the match. One of the bright spots in the match was first doubles where Lauren Beckman and Helen Nelson played first doubles. This was Helen's first time playing in this spot as a 9th grader and it was great watching her handling the pressure and with Lauren as her partner and experience I am sure this helped her through the match. At 3rd doubles Tin M and Shelby S played their second time together in doubles. It was great seeing them working much better during the points now they how what each other does on the court. Cardinals next matches are next week against Andover at Bob Pivec Courts (9/3), at Blaine (9/4) and home against Irondale (9/5). Next weekend the Cardinals will travel to Alexandria for a round robin tourney with JV and Varsity. Results are as follows:

The Coon Rapids tennis team beat Rogers 4-3 in closely tight match. The match came down to Karly Westra who won at 4th singles. During the first set I had some uncertainty about how some of our points were going so I asked Karly if she liked pressure and Karly said yes. Then she realized what she said and then rebuked this statement which I told her to late. As Karly was playing we lost at 3rd singles in a super tie-breaker in the 3rd set bringing the match to 3-3. Karly ended up wining 7-6, 6-4 bringing Coon Rapids to their 3rd win. Another highlight for me was as Karly was coming off of the court Carly Nelson 7th grader was the first person to congratulate Karly, which is extremely neat to see. Another important part of the match was watching Lauren Beckman use her leadership skills at 3rd doubles with Helen Nelson as they won in straight sets.

Coon Rapids 4      Rogers 3

1st Singles   Emily Bauer         lost    2-6, 6-3, 8-10

Next match is when Cardinals host Irondale at the Bob Pivec courts on the 26th

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Coon Rapids girls tennis season started yesterday at the Bob Pivec courts where the Cardinals hosted Cretin Derham Hall, Spring Lake Park and Hibbing. Going into the matches I kept 12 players who I was going to have each player play twice. My hope was to win all three matches and have each player win at least once. As a team we came with a 2-1 record and having each player win at least once. During the duration of the three matches some important items were noticeable. We have several players who can play both singles and doubles. Another item is that we I think we need to still work on our doubles for more compatible partners. Results are as follows:

We played Cretin first, with having some new players playing their first Varsity match. Helen Nelson (9th) and Karly Westra (10) won their first Varsity matches right out of the gate. I believe these two players with Allison Bauer are the future of Cardinal tennis with the youth. I'm not including the leadership from our Seniors or Juniors.

Coon Rapids 6   Cretin 1

In the second match we played Spring Lake Park which is team that is in our section. In the match there were some tough points that I thought we would win that we came up on the short end. With some work I believe we can turn this around into positive results. As a doubles team we need to close in our volleys and hit these shots to the right spot. In singles we need to hit to our opponents weak spot in the court.

Detailed Results

Tennis results from last week saw the Cardinals loose two very tight matches to Armstrong and Maple Grove. In the Armstrong match the cardinals lost 4-3 in what was a very tight match. In the match we were without two of our top players due to illness. Heidi Hannula was moved to 3rd singles and continued her winning ways by winning in straight sets. At 3rd doubles we played Amber Harris and Jane Hannula together figuring with their speed they should be able to run down any ball which they did. Andrea and Ally won in 3 sets by taking control of the match winning the 2 and 3 set in a resounding manner. Our overall record is 8-11 with the results as follows:

1st Singles            Emily Bauer                        lost         6-0, 6-0

2nd Singles           Lauren Beckman              lost         6-0, 6-0

3rd Singles            Heidi Hannula                    won       6-4, 6-3

                                Ally Bauer

3rd Doubles         Jane Hannula                     won       6-0, 7-5

                                Amber Harris

Two days after playing Armstrong we than traveled to Maple Grove which I knew going into the match it would be close. The Cardinals ended up losing 4-3 making it the 5th match we lost in this kind of manner. Going into the match we moved Heidi to 2nd singles not knowing if she could compete here and she won 6-1, 6-2 bringing her singles record undefeated. Hannah Naegele came back from a week of being sick to win in straight sets. At one point we were up 3-2 in match score leaving up to 1st singles or 1st doubles to secure the 4th point. We came up a little short but I am hoping we will us these close losses as what items we need to do to make a run in the section playoffs. The seeding meeting is tonight and we start section play on Thursday depending on the weather conditions. We have one non-conference match left on Wednesday against Chisago Lakes at the Bob Pivec courts. Our record is 8-11 with results as follows:

1st Singles            Emily Bauer                        lost         7-6, 5-7, 3-6

Also, Tina McManus ended up winning in three sets after losing the first set, she battled hard and in the 2nd and 3rd sets was moving her opponent around. In the Bob Pivec Invitational Coon Rapids started out the Round Robin by playing Roseville in what proved to be another close match for the Cardinals. We knew it would be tough matches without Heidi Hannula who was at a church retreat. Highlights with our match started out at 1st singles where Emily Bauer beat her opponent for the first time through many losses during the summer tournaments. It was her second loss of the season. I’m hoping it gave Emily some confidence in her upcoming matches. Lauren had a great match where she lost her first set and then won 2nd set before losing the super tiebreaker 10-8. Our third match of the day was against Spring Lake Park which is a team that is in our section which made this match important. We won 5-2 bringing our overall record to 1-2. The highlight was watch some of our players coming out with great energy after some seemed a little tired during our second match. Emily Bauer was pretty tough during the whole day. It was great watching her playing in the number one spot all day and competing opposing teams top player. Her hard work over the off season payed off, Also during the day we had 7 different players playing in the first varsity match and I was proud how hard they worked. Results for our last match area as follows:

It seems a different player steps up and has a great match each time CR plays. This time it was Hannah Naegele. Playing Amanda Weiss, a dangerous strong player, Hannah had her best match of the season and gave the Cardinals the 4th point to secure the match. Again strong doubles play allows CR to be in the position to win, but one of the singles players have to step up and win a tough one if the team is going to win. A great team victory! On to Elk River

The biggest win was Heidi Hannula's at 4th singles. This victory sealed the match for us. The most impressive victory was Lauren Beckman's 7-5, 7-5 victory. Lauren was down in both sets at 1-4 and 2-5 and came back and won both sets and the match.

Emily Bauer at first singles was the last person on the courts for CR. The best compliment came from Osseo's coach who said that "there is no quit in that girl".
