Girls tennis team lost to Rogers on Thursday 7-0 ending the season. Even though we lost, some of the players improved so much this season. Gabbi Newton played some of her best tennis at the end of the season. Brookly Nienaber had some solid wins at 2nd second doubles. Macie Ruddy and Casey Beck played some great doubles together. The girls tennis team competed against Anoka in the 1st round of sections yesterday at tehri place. Anoka was the 11th seed and Coon Rapids was 14th seed. Earlier in the season we competed against Anoka and lost 4-3. During this match we started out with 3 quick points but won the next 4 points. Yesterday the same scenario occurred. We won 3 points pretty fast. Gabby Newton is probably playing her best tennis of the year at 1st singles. Zoe and Lily won in straight sets at 1st doubles. They are complimenting each other so well right now. April and Macie played 3rd doubles and they also won in straight sets. With that being said we had 3 points, the question was where are we going to secure the 4th point. Aeriel played 4th singles and Katilyn played 3rd singles. Each was competitive but lost in straight sets. 2nd doubles of Carly and Mckenzie played 2nd doubles and lost in 3 sets. They played a great match. Many times they had chances to close out points and Anoka had an answer. Brooklyn was the deciding point at 2nd doubles. Brooklyn started out at Anoka in high school and moved to Coon Rapids. Brooklyn lost her first set 6-2 and at the start of the 2nd set I told her to use all of her shots. During the 2nd set Brooklyn was using her slice on her backhand and forehands to change the pace of the ball which gave her success. Brooklyn won the 2nd set 6-4. The 3rd set came down to whoever was going to make the least amount of mistakes. The games kept switching back and forth. At one point Brooklyn was down 4-5 and 5-6 which she broke Anoka serve each time. In the tiebreaker Brooklyn was up 5-0 right off the bat and ended up winning 7-2 to secure the win. What a great match by Brookyln. Next up for the cardinals is the 5th seed Rogers on Thursday. Results are as follows:

The tennis team finished the season against Big Lake and Osseo over the last 2 days. On Wednesday the tennis team secured their first win against Big Lake winning 5-2. Gabby, Brooklyn and Catilyn won in straight sets. Zoe and Lily also won in straight sets at 1st doubles. Macie Ruddy and Casey Beck won in straight sets at 3rd doubles. It was Casey's 1st win on Varsity. Casey is a 1st year player who used to do Volleyball and is an extremely good basketball player. It is great having her on the team. Today the team competed against Osseo in the crossover match. Earlier in the year we lost 5-2 and today we won 5-2. All singles won and 3rd doubles again. Aerial Jaspers won her first match of the season. So many times she lost close matches and yet today she fought hard like she has the whole season. So proud of everyone. Results are as follows:

The team had 2 matches this past week. On Wednesday we competed against St. Francis and Thursday Centennial. On Wednesday we lost 5-2 in another close match. It was decided prior to the match that if any spots were split we were going to play super tiebreakers for the 3rd set. 1st singles with Gabby lost in 3 sets as well as 3rd doubles with Macy and Casey. 2nd singles with Zoe lost 6-3, 7-5, Zoe was down 5-2 in the second and competed hard in the set. The 2nd doubles lost their 1st set in tiebreaker which they had some set points. Centennial lost 6-1 with Brooklyn winning her match in straight sets. Gabby and Lily played together at 1st doubles for their first time and lost in a close match. They complimented each other in playing out points. Zoe played 1st doubles and watching her play she was constructing points amazingly. This week we take on Big Lake and we have our cross over match which I am not sure who it will be. Results are as follows:

The girls tennis team lost to Blaine 7-0 at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. We knew going into the match they were going to be decent and they were. Doubles played pretty good in their match. With Brooklyn missing we had to move our lineup around and the players worked hard in their matches. Coach Fedor had their players keep the ball in play as they were pretty consistent. Our round robin with Delano, Totino Grace and St. Francis was rained out on Saturday. Results are as follows:
Coon Rapids 0 Blaine 7

The tennis team lost to Armstrong yesterday 5-2 in which players competed hard in a losing effort. April at 4th singles played a good match especially in the second set. I encourage her during the 1st set to get deeper in the court behind the baseline so she has more time to hit her groundstrokes. In the second set she told me on a changeover that it was working. Macie and Katilyn played a pretty good match at 2nd doubles. 1st doubles also lost in 3 sets. We take on Blaine today at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Results are as follows:
Coon Rapids 2 Armstrong 5

Tennis team on Saturday competed in the Moose Tennis Tournament played at Brainerd High School and other sites. The 8 teams playing in the tournament were Brainerd, Pequot Lakes, East Grand Forks, Roseau, New Prague, Big Lake and Glencoe Silver- Lake. The tournament was pool play based on your position so for example all 1st singles were put in two pools of 4 and you played each team. Based on how you did you would play someone in the pool for placement in the tournament. The players played pretty well which I am hoping will be of things to come. We ended up in 4th or 5th place which was a good day. Gabbi Newton at 1st singles was 2-2 and when she played in the 3rd place match she probably played the best match of the season losing to her opponent 6-4, 7-5. Brooklyn Nienaber was 3-1 on the day. After a tough match against Anoka on Thursday Brooklyn played amazing in her matches. April Alabase was 2-2 at 4th singles which was 4th place. Zoe and Lily were also 2-2 which was good for 4th place. 3rd doubles Amelia, Kimora and Melina also took 4th place. So on the day we had 1 2nd place and 4th 4th place finishes. Records on the day are as follows:
Gabbi Newton 2-2
Brooklyn Nienaber 3-1
Aeriel Jaspers 0-4
April Alabase 2-2

April played her first match at Varsity and won in straight sets. 3rd doubles with Casey Beck (1st Varsity match) and Macie lost in a 3rd set tiebreaker. It was so nice to see that after winning the 1st set and losing the 2nd 6-0, they played so hard to get the set to a tiebreaker in the 3rd. 1st doubles won in 3 sets while Brooklyn lost in 3. Tennis team started the 2022 tennis season with 2 tournaments. On the 19th we played at Stillwater. The teams there are some of the top in the state. In the first round we played against Stillwater which we lost 7-0. We had some points where we were competitive. In the 2nd round we lost 7-0 to Rochester Lourdes. As I told the players going into this and at the end you have to go into these matches that you are good and if you lose what do I need to work on. I asked the players if they want to play in this again and they all said yes. We got rained out for the 3rd round. On the 20th we played in our round robin. Hibbing, Cretin and Buffalo played in these matches. Hibbing and Creitn have been playing in this round robin for over 15 years which is always great seeing these coaches. In the first round we played against Buffalo which we lost 7-0. We had some points where we were extremely close in the 1st set but couldn't keep it close in the second sets. I told our team that we can not let a close set that you lose bother you as it will affect you in the next set. Cretin was the 2nd round match which we lost 5-2. 3rd doubles lost in 2 close matches as they played a pretty good match. Brooklyn at 2nd lost in a Super tiebreaker. In the last match we went up against Hibbing that we lost 6-1. Gabbi Newton won her 1st match at 1st singles after playing against some top singles players in the state over the past few matches. We are an inexperienced team that players are going to have to play their matches just like what they do in practices and believe in themselves.
